Chapter Seventy-Seven – Seek and Destroy

Deena’s hands clapped together, and around them swirled a dark violet energy that manifested quickly—a chaotic but skillfully contained power. She thrust them forwards, and from the tips of her fingers came a piercing, black arrow, that soared through the air and directly through the chest of the stone-like beast. The area around the point of contact cracked and crumbled but it otherwise unperturbed. Death Arrow!

She had read much about demons, and it was true that they were unpredictable, but having no inner organs was a bother. None of her curses would work, nor would a stab through the chest. They would have to knock it to pieces.

“Hey!” Deena called.

Renatta, unsure if it was to her, glanced down from the rooftop. “Me?”

“I’m afraid there’s no strategy for now. We just need to break it apart, so throw what you can. Just remember that it isn’t organic.”

Chapter Seventy-Six – Attack of Titans

Before them was an elderly woman surrounded by a cute wood workshop of machines and tools and layers of fabrics. Her skin was tinted a sickly green beneath blond locks of hair, and where her eyes should have been, were a pink and blue button sewed to flesh. They somehow were still able to see, however, as she did her job as any craftsman would. Said job, being a seamstress, was easier for her, as hanging from her body were many loose strings that she controlled as any would do so with arms.

Kevin watched as she completed the last strand of her project. This time, his skin was only as white as his ginger nature allowed. It surprised himself that he wasn’t terrified.

“So you were able to find what I asked about?” Eldrian had waited patiently for her to be finished. “I know it was an odd, tricky request.”

Chapter Seventy-Five – A Peaceful Life

Among the shadows and stagnant air, something was miss—a tension, a rage. They felt it approaching up from the darkest depths. It was the woman with purple hair, and to contrast her face was more red than usual. When she reached the clearing, she took a deep breath and eyed over the other demons with struggling breaths.

She crossed her arms and tapped her toe. After she was finished looking too miffed to speak, she shot a glare to Skello sitting in the corner. “Even you stayed. At least there’s that. I don’t know what I expected from humans, but I thought they’d be more intelligent than that. But, no. They ran, and they’ll surely get caught.”

Ivar stood up. “What happened, ma’am?”

“Those three fools I decided to free from the Demon World… The ones gifted by the Elixir. They fled, and I have no clue where they went. I guess they want to die.” She stepped past the line of her companions, eyeing each over as she went. “Ivar. What is it you want?”

Chapter Seventy-Three – Runnin’ with the Devil

Everybody gathered, again at Deena’s house. Perhaps she was getting used to it, or perhaps she was biding her time to one day kill them all for intruding on her home for the hundredth time. Either way, Eldrian explained all he knew—about Rend, about Kali.

“But no leads,” Deena immediately said.

“No, but I figure with all of us, we can start looking into it tomorrow. We’ll probably discover something. But also, everybody be as careful as possible. Any of those guys could be after us. Watch your backs. Stay in public, where they wouldn’t dare out themselves.”

“Roger!” Renatta said. “I will not be hypnotized into trying to kill you again.”

“That’s good to know.”

Chapter Seventy – Broken

There was an eternity of silence after she took her last breath. How much time had passed? Minutes. Hours. The man stood looking over a fallen angel, to the greatest emptiness he’d felt in his heart, and thus he was unable to move. Lately, he hadn’t eaten, and he barely slept. The man’s frame was naught but skin and bones. When he finally moved, he pressed his hands against the window, and stared at the city he so deeply despised. No. It wasn’t the city. It was the people. To him, they were monsters.

Rage boiled up inside of him. He snapped, and slammed his fists against the wobbling glass, over and over again. The frame cracked, and his hands bled, but it didn’t satisfy him.

“Why?” he shouted. “Why must you treat a human like a mangy dog? She only needed one thing! Why? So send your hunters then. Try to take me away. It is your fault that nobody trusts us! Who’s the monster now?”

Chapter Sixty-Nine – Monster Party

Far from the prying eyes of man, lost in the never-ending wilds of Canada’s outskirts, in a place animals dare not even roam, was a single cave among the rocks. It was an ordinary cave, but the contents within were what brought danger. Past the entrance, a tunnel descended, and then opened into a large expanse within, but it was far from vacant. Basic furnishings were set, from chairs to tables, and upon the walls were sconces that held eerie blue flames which emitted no heat.

Skello, as mostly skinless as he was, clicked along the stone with his skeletal feet, following along with a tap from the bottom of his scythe as a walking stick. The woman he was following, the one with purple hair, horns, and the rest, introduced herself as a demon. He pondered. Had he seen a demon before? He wasn’t sure. All he knew for certain was she must be really partial to purple, though he didn’t argue, as he felt the same.

“Not the most glamourous base, I admit. But you make sacrifices to get what you want. At least it’s bigger on the inside,” she said.
